[Syntax] 4. Constituency (2)

4.2 Substitution (Replacement)

Substitution Test: A particular string of words must be a constituent if it can be substituted by a suitable proform

4.2.1 Substitution of nominal projectsion: NP

(1) My father admires my mother.

(2) He admires her.

(3) Speaker A: What do you think of the guy who wrote that unbelievably boring book on Transformational Gramar?

      Speaker B: I can't stand him.

우리가 흔히 알고 있는 용어에 따라 표현하자면 [the guy who wrote that unbelievably boring book on Transformational Gramar]는 Pronoun(대명사) him 의 antecedent(대명사)라고 할 수 있다. 하지만 이 표현은 적절하지 않다. 왜냐하면  him은 명사(noun)을 대신하는 것이 아니라, 명사구 전체(Noun Prase)를 대신하기 때문이다. 그래서 pro-NP(pro-Noun Phrase) 라는 표현이 더 정확하다.

4.2.2 Other Phrase substitution

1. pro-PP: pro-Prepositional Phrase

(1) Speaker A: Have you ever been to Paris?

Speaker B: No, I have never been there.

He, she, it 등의 인칭대명사는 full NP를 대치한다.

그리고 영어에서는 full NP 보다 작은 단위를 대치할 수 있는 대용어가 있는데 바로 proform one 이다.

One-Substitution: The Proform one replaces N'-constituents.
